DVD Inlay - Final Bits & Possible Improvements

The DVD inlay is pretty much finished. It is now just a case of adding the blurb to the back and trying to find a colour where it stands out enough so it is legible. I also need to add a disclaimer to the bottom and some logo's to fill in any empty spaces.

Adding the text is pretty straightforward using the horizontal type tool. I make sure that I also have the character and character styles toolbars maximised so I can change font and colour very easily.

As I have already drafted the "blurb" I can copy and paste this in and then break it up into lines by using the return key. I then play about with various different colours from blues to golds to yellows and even the grey that I use on the front cover. None look particularly good. I settle for using the same red as I use for the Vs sign and adding a Bevel and Emboss effect to it. I can access all the effects by double clicking on the newly created text layer.

I'm still not 100% happy with it but it seems to be the best I can do for now. I may well come back to this at a later date to see if I can think of anything better.

For the disclaimer I decided to use the Lorem Ipsum generator on the main website.

http://www.lipsum.com/

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text with roots back to classical Latin and is used by the industry as a way of creating a placeholder effect to give an effect of proper text before it is known. There is a generator on the site that creates various lengths of text that you can specify and then use in various projects.

I decided to use it since it is an industry staple. However as I know mine is going to be for a disclaimer I put All Rights Reserved at the front as this is pretty much what people will see. They'll hopefully then skip over the rest and not notice it is gibberish afterwards. It's something I may also come back to later on and replace it with an actual disclaimer that I will write.

Lastly I needed to add the ID Software logo and the Gearbox logo. I get these off the internet using a Google search for the company name and logo. Luckily there are a lot of examples so I am able to find recent versions of them on a black background.

Once I have these in place there is still a bit of space below the minimum and recommended specs and the disclaimer so I fill these with an Nvidia, AMD and ID Tech 5 logo.

The finished back cover where I have done the work now looks like this.

Overall I am happy with how it looks. I don't think there is too much on the back I will need to change except maybe, as previously mentioned, changing the red lettering to a different colour that works better with the main image.

It's probably the front that still needs some work and it's going back to my attempts at putting Duke in Hell.

Duke still doesn't really look to be part of the same picture as Doom and the demons he is fighting.

I will definitely be trying to improve how this picture looks. Either trying further lower the contrast and brightness of Duke or possibly increasing the contrast and vibrancy of the Doom image. I will also try to add some of the red highlights that the Doom guy has on his legs and thighs to the same areas of Duke.

Hopefully with a few more tweaks I can make this picture more believable.

I am largely going to be moving on to Illustrator for the time being in an effort to get work done on the dvd label and then come back to this at the end for the finishing touches.
