This will need to include:
- A DVD case cover for the game / film produced in Adobe Photoshop.
- A label for the DVD to be produced in Adobe Illustrator.
- A 60 second promotional spot to be produced using Adobe Premiere.
As soon as I heard about the project I really only had one idea that immediately sprung to mind which I would like to do anyway and that would be a PC game that I would actually like to play.
That game is: Duke Nukem vs Doom (DvD).
I will continue to think on about other possibilities but will go ahead with the initial design process on DvD and see if it works out well.
I already decided that I wanted the game to have a very tongue-in-cheek feel to it. Given the characters and the genre I think it would actually work well in real life with fans of both games and will also be slightly more fun for me to do.
Both being pre-existing PC games already the logo's for the brand are already reasonably well established.
The above is the iconic Duke Nukem logo from the very popular Duke Nukem 3D. More recently the Duke Nukem logo was updated slightly with the release of Duke Nukem Forever.
The Duke Nukem Logo is very similar to the previous version but it looks a bit more 3D and also has a nicer higher resolution image. However given how much the Duke Nukem Forever was largely disliked by fans and critics alike I think going back to the original logo will be better. Plus I think it will work better with the Doom logo I plan on using.
The above represents pictures represent the logo from the first two games. These are the games that brought first person shooters into the spotlight. Whilst there were games before that that would also be classed as FPS's Doom was the first one that attracted a large core audience and really popularised the genre in my opinion.
Doom 3 which came out in 2004, 11 years after the first one, updated the logo a bit to look like below.
It is still very similar but like Duke Nukem Forever the logo gets a bit of a polish and looks a bit more metallic and chunky.
Given that I want my game to play on the nostalgia of the older fans of the originals I will most likely want to use the older version from Doom 1 and Duke Nukem 3D with a similar style yellow VS symbol between the two as both logo's utilise yellow.
I will arrange the two logo's underneath each other so they can be big and bold, something like below:
Doom
VS
Duke Nukem
Underneath this I will have a picture of the two main characters facing off against each other. Probably face to face if I can find some good images to use.
At the bottom and keeping with the current convention of games have multiple editions with special downloadable content (dlc) included I will also name my version accordingly.
There is a reasonably famous (amongst fans) quote from Duke Nukem about people who wear armour which I intend to mimic. I'll leave it up to you to decipher and hope it's vague enough to be in good taste!
It will be along the lines of:
Edition
I'll obviously think of some way of making it look better by imposing it onto the background of the two protagonists and have it at the bottom of the front cover. It will be quite small so as not to obscure the faces of Duke and Doom guy too much. The Is For in the middle will be more prominent and the "Edition" may also be added to the same line if space is an issue.
The back of the case will have the PC game rating and the normal ESRB information along with the minimum specification details at the bottom. I will also need to include the Gearbox (or possibly 3D Realms logos) and the ID software logo as the IP's for Duke Nukem and Doom are owned by these two companies. Duke Nukem is a bit tricky since the original games were made by 3D Realms and then Gearbox bought the rights and finished off the DNF game which did so badly so in some ways I would like to leave Gearbox off in a nod to 3D Realms but given that I do want this game to feel authentic I will probably put both Gearbox & 3D Realms logo's on it.
The back covers of the most recent games of both look like this:
Both have the kind of details I will need along with the companies logo's that I will also need to include.
They also include screenshots of the game and some description at the back about the game.
For my game I plan on making the main story playthrough a co-op experience with a deathmatch multi-player segment that pits the 2 main characters against one another and is where the game title mostly stems from.
The catch line on the back will be something along the lines of:
"The earth is threatened by the greatest force of evil ever and 2 unlikely heroes are forced together in a desperate bid to save it".
Then maybe in small writing underneath I'll add something like:
"We tried to get Serious Sam Stone as well but his agent said he had been crushed by a boulder trap last week and was still recuperating".
Again another nod to fans of the genre as to why another main character from old school FPS's isn't in this one......but could possibly make an expansion which I will allude to in the 60 second promotional trailer. May need to make the statement shorter and more catchy!
The background may well be a couple of the girls from Duke Nukem Forever and have everything layered on top of them. Ideally with a colour theme to match the front cover and spine so there is a continuation of theme from the front of the cover to the back.
Then I'll have a couple of screenshots which I will mock up of the head up display from both games superimposed onto a screenshot of the other game. So it will be the Doom HUD with a Doom weapon but fighting enemies found in Duke Nukem and vice versa. These will be easily recognised by fans of the genre.
I also really like the idea of a picture with a blurb next to it shouting about next gen graphics sice that is such a buzzword these days with the release of the new consoles. However maybe give them a twist along the lines of:
"Graphics so next-gen they actually look retro".
This would be next to a screenshot of a secret level in Doom 2 that features graphics from Commander Keen which was also a big game by ID Software but that look really bad by today's standards.
I'll remove the HUD and try to make the screenshot look as blocky as possible. This would fit in well with the overall tongue-in-cheek game design but actually I think would still be very viable in the real world too as fans of the genre and the games would understand the joke.
Alongside the screenshot of Doom HUD with Duke Aliens I would reference the co-op aspect of the game and how you would have to team up with access to the favourite weapons & powerups from both characters.I will try to list a few of them space permitting.
Alongside the screenshot of Duke HUD with Doom Aliens I would reference the multi-player (MP) aspect of the game with a tagline of something like:
"So once they've saved the world, rescued the babes (not necessarily in that order) and sat back to enjoy a beer or ten old rivalries re-surface and the argument of who is the best continues. Now you can fight using both characters against each other in explosive multi-player modes to determine once and for all who is the greatest saviour of Earth and biggest badass!".
That should fill up the DVD case for the game quite nicely although I will have to see if there is enough space to fit everything in. The spine will just have the Duke vs Doom name on it along with a rating at the bottom.
I have an idea for the dvd label which will be an explosion in the background with Doom Vs Duke in big bold lettering looking like they have blown out of that explosion. I'll definitely continue to think on this aspect though.
I am pretty sure the trailer will be some gameplay recorded from both games and some writing put up at regular intervals to list each feature of the game. As both games have been open to modding for years I am hoping that there will already be some footage of Duke and Doom fighting each other that I can use for the video.
I also want to include a bit about a powerup in the multi-player aspect of it that fans should fine funny. It will be along the lines of:
"You've had quad damage before, now we bring you DeKKaDamage. Yes, 10 times damage. How did we balance this you ask......we didn't; it's totally OP!!!!!
That's it for my initial ideas. I'm really looking forward to seeing how well this project goes and hope to come up with a concept that both myself and other FPS fans would want to play.
